About The Antarctic

The Antarctic isnโ€™t a common destination for holidaying for a majority of travellers yet. However, tourist footfall has seen a steep rise in the past decade despite highly regulated commercial tourism. It is only possible to visit the region between November and March, and cruises are the only option to reach.

With more operators adding the Antarctic to their list of destinations covered, it is now easy to experience a polar expedition to the Antarctic. Home to the majestic Emperor penguin, whales, seals and unusual marine species, this region is a largely untouched wilderness.

Sweeping snow-capped landscapes, heritage research stations, massive nature reserves, towering icebergs, cliffs and peaks and awe-inspiring Northern lights. This apparently barren wilderness houses so many exciting offerings. Holidays to the Antarctic can be an unforgettable and powerful experience.

Visit the Falkland Islands, South Georgia Islands, and South Shetland Islands, and travel to the Ross Sea or Weddell Sea. Explore the operational research stations, historical huts and wildlife sites. For the adventure lover in you, get to engage in kayaking, mountaineering and scuba-diving.

To visit a region that is often less traveled to, you need expert guidance and assistance. Tailormade Travel is your best partner for holidays in the Antarctic.

Our travel experts come with the necessary expertise to offer bespoke packages and hassle-free trips to the polar regions. We partner with some of the biggest cruise operators conducting voyages to the Antarctic. The Antarctic Experiences

Antarctica offers unparalleled experiences for the intrepid traveler. Expedition cruises allow visitors to explore the remote, icy continent, where they can witness breathtaking landscapes of towering icebergs, vast ice sheets, and rugged mountains. Wildlife encounters are a highlight, with opportunities to see emperor and Adรฉlie penguins, seals, and whales. Activities such as kayaking among ice floes, ice climbing, and snowshoeing provide adventurous ways to experience the continentโ€™s pristine environment. Visits to scientific research stations offer insights into the cutting-edge studies conducted in this extreme location. The sense of isolation and untouched beauty makes a trip to Antarctica a truly once-in-a-lifetime adventure.

Getting Around in The Antarctic

Travel to and within Antarctica is highly specialized, typically conducted through expedition cruises that depart from Ushuaia, Argentina, or Punta Arenas, Chile. These cruises use ice-strengthened vessels equipped to navigate the treacherous waters of the Southern Ocean. On the continent, transport is primarily by Zodiac boats for shore landings and excursions. Helicopters may be used for accessing more remote areas and providing aerial views of the landscape. Overland travel is limited and usually done with tracked vehicles or skis. All travel in Antarctica follows strict environmental guidelines to minimize impact and ensure safety.

The Antarctic Food and Drink

Food and drink options in Antarctica are largely determined by the logistics of supply for expeditions and research stations. Expedition cruises often provide high-quality, international cuisine with a focus on hearty, warming meals. Fresh produce is limited, so meals rely on preserved and frozen ingredients. Typical dishes might include soups, stews, pasta, and seafood. Alcohol is available on many cruises, with a selection of wines, beers, and spirits. At research stations, food is more utilitarian, designed to provide maximum nutrition and energy for the harsh conditions, with a focus on canned, dried, and frozen goods.

The Antarctic Climate

Antarctica is the coldest continent on Earth, with winter temperatures plunging as low as -128.6ยฐF (-89.2ยฐC) in the interior. Coastal regions are relatively milder but still extremely cold, with summer temperatures ranging from 14ยฐF to 50ยฐF (-10ยฐC to 10ยฐC). The continent is enveloped in ice and snow, with katabatic winds creating extremely harsh conditions. Antarctica experiences polar summers with continuous daylight and polar winters with extended darkness. The best time to visit is during the Antarctic summer (November to March), when temperatures are more manageable, and wildlife is most active.
